Self-Publishing is a process that an author uses to prepare their manuscript for print, online, and electronic distribution, making their title available to readers and booksellers in at least one of these formats.
Self-published authors should retain 100% ownership of their copyrighted materials and have the ability to price, package and distribute it as they desire, versus traditional publishing, wherein an author will enter into a contract with a publishing house that will own the rights to the author’s materials to edit, package it and sell it the way they see fit.
Traditional publishers may pay the author an advance for their material and take care of editing, formatting, documentation and everything else required to publish the book. In self-publishing, authors will not be paid upfront for their manuscript, however they will earn royalties (a percentage of their book’s retail price) whenever their book is ordered, or they may print and sell their own book copies and keep their own profits. The self-publishing author edits, formats, and completes the proper documentation for their manuscript on their own or hires an agent or company to do it for them.
