Frequently Asked Questions

How long will it take to publish my book?

The length of time required to publish your book depends on how complete your project is at the beginning of this process. On average the process is 6-12 months.

If you are publishing a manuscript that has already been edited but requires a custom cover design, formatting, etc., you can expect a timeframe of 4-6 weeks.

If your manuscript also needs to be edited, you should plan for an additional 6-12 weeks, depending on the level of editing that is required.

If your manuscript also involves heavy formatting (many pictures, tables, etc.) you should also anticipate a longer process to allow for formatting.

In any event, it is not advised to rush the process, i.e. do not set a book signing date before the book has been edited.

How much will it cost to print copies of my book?

With Lightning Source’s Print-On-Demand technology, Rain Publishing offers extremely cost-effective rates for authors who want to order copies of their own books.
For softcover, black and white interior books of 50-200 pages, you can expect to pay $3-5* per book copy INCLUDING shipping and handling within the U.S. The cost per book decreases when you order larger quantities. Hardcover books and full color books are more expensive to print.
*Compare this to the printing rates of many publishing agencies that will merely offer authors a discount off the retail price of their book resulting in significantly higher costs per book copy. This inhibits the author’s ability to make a real profit when it comes to book sales.

Where will my book be sold?

When you publish with Rain Publishing, your book will be distributed via Ingram’s global market access service, which includes over 39,000 booksellers, libraries, and online retailers, including all the major retailers you know and love (Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc.)
Please note that while your book is available to all of these booksellers around the world, it does not mean the stores will automatically carry your book. You may have to contact bookstores individually to cause them to carry your book.
Physical bookstores will often not carry a book unless it is listed as returnable, minimizing the risk for them if your book does not sell. When your book is returnable, the bookstore can return it for a refund if it does not sell. Beginning November 2014, Rain Publishing will automatically list your book as returnable and the author will be responsible for any return fees from other booksellers. Authors may opt out of the bookseller return program.

Who will have the rights to my book?
When you publish with Rain Publishing, we hold publishing rights to your book and you, the author hold the copyright to the book. This means you control the destiny of your work and should you choose to change your relationship with Rain Publishing, you can do so at any time.
What royalties will I earn and how will they be paid?

Authors who self-publish directly through Rain Publishing, receive 100% of the royalties paid through extended distribution and from direct sales of their own books. Payments are made through your publishing platform monthly.***

***Compilation books have different royalty/payment terms. See your specific terms if you are part of a Rain Publishing compilation project.
